Education and Opportunity

Education is key to success in our economy. I support efforts to ensure all students have access to a high quality education, one that best fits their learning needs. I will work to update critical education policies and return decision-making back to parents and communities.

In addition, I support improving access to quality, affordable higher education. I will support efforts to help students and parents have clear information about the real costs of college. This includes reforms that ensure student aid will be available for those who need it most and reductions in costly federal regulations on colleges and universities. It is time for a new direction, one in which institutions, states and the students themselves play a key role in helping control costs and making responsible choices.

Finally, scientific and technological discoveries have made our country a global economic leader.  I support efforts aimed at spurring innovation, which will lead to economic growth and create jobs for the American people.  Additionally, I believe we should encourage our children to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow.  I support efforts to increase access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs in order to inspire children to pursue these fields.

“The USMCA is a tremendous victory for the American people and President Trump. This new trade agreement with our neighbors will benefit Michigan workers and Michigan farmers. We have the best workers in the world and this agreement will help ensure they are competing against the competition on a level playing field, especially in manufacturing. It will also open new markets for our farmers so they sell more Michigan-grown food to our neighbors. It has been nearly a year since this agreement was first signed and I hope the House will schedule a vote on it before the end of the year.”

It is my hope that this legislation will result in better care for patients, with more doctors living and working closer to those they care for in our rural communities where they are needed most.”

February 5, 2019 Press Release
"The state of the union is strong. Unemployment is under four percent, millions of jobs have been created, and tax rates are lower. It’s time for both parties to come to the table and work together with the president to build on the success of the past two years. If both parties work together, we can secure our borders to stop illegal drugs and prevent human trafficking, while welcoming people who want to enter the country legally to pursue the American Dream.
