Second Amendment

As a supporter of the Second Amendment, I believe the right to bear arms is a fundamental principle upon which the founders built our nation. This right must be preserved for future generations.

“This new classification of gun purchases is a dangerous breach of the privacy Americans expect when they buy something from a business. Liberal activists are already planning to use this new information to report their fellow citizens to law enforcement for the very act of exercising their Second Amendment right to own firearms. What other purchases will these credit card companies report to liberal activists next? This is unacceptable and these companies must be held accountable for their decisions,” said Congressman Moolenaar.

"This far-left gun ban violates the Second Amendment and the rights of law-abiding Michiganders to defend themselves. Today’s extreme proposal would ban many of the firearms legally owned by Michigan residents and make them illegal,” said Moolenaar. "Many Democrats would ban all private gun ownership if they could. That’s why I will never stop fighting for the Constitution and the rights of Michigan residents."

“Due-process is a right guaranteed to every American, and no citizen should have that right taken away. I voted against this bill because it would take the hard-earned money of Michigan taxpayers and give it to states so they can enforce unconstitutional laws that deny Americans their due process and Second Amendment rights,” said Congressman John Moolenaar.

"Today's ruling is a win for law-abiding citizens who safely exercise their Second Amendment rights. Crime is a serious concern for American families and they have the right to self-defense. New York’s law blatantly infringed upon this right, and the Court was right to strike down this unconstitutional power grab," said Congressman John Moolenaar.

"Due-process is a vital right enjoyed by every American, and no citizen should have that taken away. I voted against this bill because it would allow a judge to take someone’s firearms from them for 14 days without an opportunity for the accused to legally defend themselves,” said Congressman John Moolenaar. “The Constitution is the cornerstone of our nation’s success and we must respect the rights it gives to individuals.”

“This legislation restricts law-abiding Michigan residents who follow the rules and safely exercise their Second Amendment rights every day,” said Congressman John Moolenaar. “Unfortunately, crime is rising in many communities. Citizens have the right to defend themselves, and this legislation would infringe upon that right. A more constructive approach to preventing crime and other tragedies would use common-sense policies that improve security, protect vulnerable people, and enable better communication between law enforcement agencies.”

"I will always defend the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans," said Congressman Moolenaar. "Right now, every commercial gun purchase in America goes through the national background check system, but today's legislation goes too far. It would give the FBI unlimited time to dig into the background of every person who purchases a gun. An unlimited timeframe is an abuse of power against law-abiding Americans and they would have no legal recourse to defend their Constitutional rights."

This legislation is a common-sense solution that allows the federal law enforcement officers to purchase and keep the firearm they have been training with and maintaining for years. I am proud to have the support of my Democratic colleague Henry Cuellar from Texas, as well as the support of the National Border Patrol Council, which represents the men and women who work hard to keep our country safe.

“Last year, I supported a new law to help fix the national background check system with more funding so states could update the system with timely information and keep guns out of the hands of people who are already prohibited from owning them. I voted against today’s legislation because it would presume all gun owners are guilty and create unfair delays for law-abiding Michigan residents who want to purchase a gun and exercise their Second Amendment rights.”

“I support the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans. Every commercial gun purchase goes through the national background check system. The legislation put forward by the Democrats today would create legal jeopardy for Michigan residents who enjoy our state’s outdoor heritage and hunting with their families.”
