Veterans

Our nation’s veterans and wounded warriors have sacrificed in defense of our country. Their dedication and commitment, along with that of their families, has ensured our freedom and should never be taken for granted.

Our veterans deserve the absolute highest quality medical care and benefits for their service. We must ensure that returning military members have access to every benefit they have been promised, As such, Congress should focus on stringent oversight of the VA to ensure veterans are getting the services they need. I will continue to put our veterans first, and fight for legislation that removes barriers for our returning veterans.

The legislation provides $300 million in funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to protect the Lakes and the $7 billion economy they support. In recognition of the EPA’s overreach with the Waters of the U.S. rule and other burdensome regulations, this bill cuts EPA spending by $452 million. It also makes changes to the visa waiver program and requires visitors to America who have traveled to terrorism hotspots to undergo rigorous background checks before entering the country.

U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar said he presented the Purple Heart to two veterans this year. The award was introduced by George Washington in 1782 to recognize and foster actions of military merit.

“These veterans, they don’t stop giving back even after leaving the service,” Moolenaar said, adding they use the skills they learned in the military for their civilian jobs, as well as join community service organizations.

This Veterans Day, we celebrate with the men and women who have defended our country. With their service they have made the world a better place and they continue to make a positive difference in our communities today.

This year, I had the honor of presenting five veterans in our region with medals, including two with the Purple Heart. All veterans deserve recognition for their service and I am privileged to assist these gentlemen in receiving their awards.

I would like to share their stories with you.

Eugene was an infantryman in World War II and was injured at the Battle of the Bulge. He has scars from his injuries and they are a reminder to us of the price that has been paid for our freedoms and our way of life.

Thank you Eugene, for serving our country and making the world a better place!

“We owe so much to these men who stepped forward to fight tyranny and made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as to the family as they have lost a brother and many years of memories. He put the country ahead of himself and we can never repay him,” said Moolenaar.

The food pantry is dedicated to serving veterans and active duty U.S. military personnel and is named in reference to the fact that one percent of the U.S. population is on active-duty defending all Americans.

"Our men and women in uniform have fought for the freedoms we celebrate on Independence Day. This food pantry is here to serve them. The outstanding volunteers here have done a great job giving back to the community," said Moolenaar.
