“This legislation is vital to the fight against the opioid epidemic and it will help law enforcement keep fentanyl and related drugs off the streets so our communities stay safe,” said Congressman Moolenaar. "The opioid crisis has hurt families across mid and northern Michigan, and this legislation will help stop the flow of fentanyl and fentanyl analogues that are brought into the United States from other countries."

"Protecting the Great Lakes is a top priority for Michigan residents and this grant will help CMU continue its vital research on the health of plants, animals, and water quality in the Great Lakes' coastal wetlands,” said Congressman John Moolenaar. “I have advocated for funding for the GLRI as a member of the House Appropriations Committee so projects like this can help protect the Great Lakes for the enjoyment of Michigan families and future generations.”

“Dam failures like this can never happen again,” said Reps. Moolenaar and Dingell. “That is why last week we reintroduced our National Dam and Hydropower Safety Act to enhance safety operation requirements nationwide, modernize existing infrastructure, and improve communications between FERC and the states. While FERC’s action today makes it clear to future potential violators they will face serious consequences, a fine that comes after the fact does very little for the people who had their homes and businesses washed away. It’s clear that FERC needs enhanced tools to address this problem, protect our communities, and hold reckless dam operators like Boyce Hydro truly accountable. Our legislation will help improve those tools and prevent these tragedies from happening in the future.”

“To invest in infrastructure President Biden should invest in the Army Corps of Engineers, and not cut its annual budget. The Army Corps has important work to do, including building a new lock at the Soo Locks, maintaining Great Lakes water levels, and preventing the spread of Asian carp. President Biden’s proposal to cut the Army Corps' annual budget harms those goals and I will be working to stop his cut,” said Congressman John Moolenaar, Michigan’s senior member of the House Appropriations Committee.

“The team at MidMichigan Health is doing a terrific job providing the vaccine to people in the community. It is encouraging to see that participation, and I hope everyone who wants it will sign up for their opportunity,” said Congressman Moolenaar. “Vaccines are already protecting many Michigan seniors from COVID-19, and with this week’s increased eligibility I hope younger adults will get vaccinated and help put this awful pandemic behind us.”

“I’ve been working hard to help our community recover, including securing approval for more than $100 million in federal assistance that has come to our community to rebuild homes, small businesses, and private wells, as well as roads and bridges,” said Moolenaar. “However, there’s no doubt that the federal and state regulators failed our community when they were working with an uncooperative private dam owner. Those failures compounded over more than a decade into a devastating event that affected the lives of thousands of residents. This bipartisan legislation will address gaps in existing law and do more to ensure compliance with the safety regulations that are paramount to protecting the people of Michigan.”
