Treasury Sanctions CCP Fentanyl Producers, But More Must Be Done To Stop Fentanyl, Secure the Border

April 14, 2023

Today, the Treasury Department sanctioned four Chinese nationals, two Chinese companies, and a Guatemala-based chemical broker working for the Sinaloa cartel, for their roles in producing fentanyl that kills Americans. Chinese companies supply precursor chemicals that are used by Mexican cartels to produce fentanyl, which is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans each year.

"The fentanyl that is killing Michiganders comes from Mexico and is made with chemicals that come from China. The sanctions that were announced today will do little to stop these criminals who are already outside the United States. While the Biden administration knows fentanyl is killing Americans, it must do more to secure the border and stop the flow of this dangerous drug from coming into the country," said Congressman John Moolenaar, a member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

"The CCP runs a surveillance state that tracks the daily lives of everyone in China. Very little happens in China that the CCP does not know about. The companies in China that export fentanyl chemicals to Mexico are acting with the implied approval of the CCP. The CCP's refusal to stop the flow of fentanyl chemicals endangers the lives of every Michigan resident and our loved ones," added Moolenaar.

The Treasury Department said in its release that "As a result of today’s action, all property and interests in property of the designated individuals and entities that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons must be blocked and reported to OFAC. In addition, any entities that are owned, directly or indirectly, 50 percent or more by one or more blocked persons are also blocked. OFAC’s regulations generally prohibit all dealings by U.S. persons or within the United States (including transactions transiting the United States) that involve any property or interests in property of designated or otherwise blocked persons."
