New Reports Once Again Show Gotion Plan is a Security Risk for Michigan

September 6, 2023

New reporting has revealed that Gotion High-Tech – whose wholly owned American subsidiary is planning to build a facility in Mecosta County – sent its employees on company field trips to Chinese Communist Party (CCP) memorials in China. Employees on the field trips dressed as Red Army members and pledged allegiance to the CCP.

In a separate report over the holiday weekend, The Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese nationals have attempted to access military installations and other sensitive sites in the United States as many as one hundred times in recent years. The Michigan National Guard has hosted trainings for Taiwanese military representatives less than 100 miles away from Gotion's proposed plant.

"Gotion’s parent company and its employees actively celebrate the CCP and pledge to advance its goals. This includes when they make decisions about their wholly-owned subsidiary and its facilities in the United States. Anyone who thinks the subsidiary is truly independent is not looking at all the facts. Further, the recent reports of CCP nationals attempting to access military sites in the U.S. should be a concern for all Americans and raises yet another obvious reason to stop the Gotion project,” said Congressman John Moolenaar.

On September 4, the Wall Street Journal reported that the federal government is aware of 100 incidents where CCP nationals tried to enter military bases, sometimes posing as tourists. The Journal wrote that, “The incidents, which U.S. officials describe as a form of espionage, appear designed to test security practices at U.S. military installations and other federal sites. Officials familiar with the practice say the individuals are typically Chinese nationals pressed into service and required to report back to the Chinese government.”
