Moolenaar’s Bill Honoring Michigan Hero Signed into Law

January 6, 2025

On Saturday, Congressman John Moolenaar’s legislation honoring Michigan native and Medal of Honor recipient, Corporal Duane Dewey, was signed into law by President Joe Biden. The law honors the late Corporal Dewey’s bravery in battle and his lifelong commitment to supporting veterans by naming the VA clinic in Cadillac after him.

“Duane Dewey courageously served our nation in the Korean War and his heroism saved lives. After returning home and receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor, he spent his life encouraging his fellow veterans with his story. Renaming the VA Clinic in Cadillac in his honor is fitting so Michigan residents will remember his bravery. I am grateful my legislation to keep his legacy alive was signed into law,” said Moolenaar.

“It was an honor and a privilege for me to know Duane Dewey and to help Michigan veterans with him. He was an incredible man and our veterans community has worked hard to make this honor happen. I am thankful to everyone who helped along the way, including the veterans organizations and Congressman Moolenaar and his team,” said Mark Fraley, who worked with Dewey and advocated for the legislation.

Last month, Moolenaar’s legislation was unanimously passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. It was cosponsored by every member of the Michigan Congressional delegation and endorsed by Michigan veterans groups  including the American Legion Department of Michiganthe Michigan Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Michigan.
