Moolenaar Welcomes Line 5 Tunnel Approval
Congressman John Moolenaar welcomed the Michigan Public Service Commission’s decision today to allow the construction of a tunnel through the Straights of Mackinac for the Line 5 pipeline.
“Line 5 is a vital source of energy for Michigan families. The decision today by the Michigan Public Service Commission will help them continue to have access to reliable, affordable energy for their homes. The tunnel project is the safest option to ensure that Line 5 can remain a source of energy for years to come. I have been working in Congress to make sure federal approvals are obtained quickly to help this project move forward, but President Biden and his administration have slowed it down every chance they get. They must now act urgently instead of continuing to oppose this vital infrastructure project for Michigan jobs and energy,” said Moolenaar.
In March, Moolenaar voted for legislation to ease the permitting process for projects like Line 5. In July, language authored by Moolenaar was included in the State Department’s budget to stop the Biden administration from using federal funds to stop the flow of energy through line 5.
Approximately 320,000 Michigan households use propane, and the state has the highest residential use of propane in the nation. Line 5 provides 55% of the state's propane needs.
