Moolenaar Votes To Override Biden’s Veto And Help Michigan Farmers
Today, Congressman John Moolenaar voted to override President Joe Biden's veto of bipartisan legislation that would repeal his Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule. This rule would significantly expand the definition of what is a navigable body of water and would increase the regulation of water on farmland in Michigan.
Congressman Moolenaar voted for the original resolution to repeal the WOTUS rule on March 9, 2023 when it passed the House with a bipartisan 227-198 vote. It passed the Democratic-controlled Senate on March 29, 2023 with a bipartisan 53-43 vote. However, on April 6th, Biden vetoed it.
"Democrats and Republicans came together to repeal President Biden's rule because it goes too far and allows bureaucrats in Washington D.C. to regulate the puddles and ditches on farmers’ fields. Now, Biden is the only one standing in the way and forcing his overreaching regulations on farmers," said Moolenaar. "I voted to override Biden’s veto so farmers can focus on growing food instead of worrying about red tape."
The American Farm Bureau opposes President Biden's veto. In a statement ripping Biden’s veto earlier this month, American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall said, "This veto flies in the face of President Biden’s promise to support farmers and ranchers. This rule is a clear case of government overreach that leaves farmers wondering whether they can farm their own land. It’s a shame the president is standing with bureaucrats instead of with the people who stock America’s pantries."
