Moolenaar Votes to Establish Task Force to Investigate Assassination Attempt on President Trump

July 25, 2024

Last night, Congressman John Moolenaar voted to create a bipartisan congressional task force to investigate the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump on July 13 in Pennsylvania.

“There were massive security failures which allowed for the failed attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump, the murder of firefighter Corey Comperatore, and the shooting of two other victims. This bipartisan task force will get answers about what happened and demand accountability for these failures to help ensure they never happen again,” said Moolenaar.

The official name of the task force is The Task Force to Investigate the Attempted Assassination of Presidential Nominee Donald Trump. It will consist of seven Republicans and six Democrats from the House of Representatives. The task force will hold full investigative authority, including subpoena power to obtain documents and compel testimony in pursuit of its goals. Those goals are:

  1. To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination
  2. To ensure accountability
  3. To prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again

On Monday, Moolenaar called for the resignation of former Director Cheatle due to her inability to provide answers about the security failures leading to the assassination attempt. Cheatle resigned on Tuesday. The resolution creating the task force passed the House of Representatives unanimously, 416 to 0.
