Moolenaar Votes to Ban Federal Oil Sales to Communist China

January 12, 2023

Today, Congressman John Moolenaar voted for legislation that would stop the Biden administration from selling oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China. Last year, the Biden administration sold U.S. oil reserves to companies owned by the Chinese government. Today’s legislation passed with massive bipartisan support in a 331-97 voteas 218 Republicans and 113 Democrats voted for the bill. The bill now goes to the Senate.

"The Chinese government is actively working to weaken the United States and the Biden administration needs to do more to stand up to China’s aggression. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve's purpose is to make sure our country has the oil we need in the event of a national emergency, and that is why I voted to make sure none of that oil is sold to China,” said Moolenaar.

Last July, House Republicans brought this same bill to the floor and Moolenaar voted for it then. However, the bill was defeated by the Democratic majority. It is not currently known why many Democrats changed their position on today’s vote.
