Moolenaar Supports Legislation to Prevent Overdoses in Rural Schools

September 25, 2023

Congressman John Moolenaar supports the Stop Overdose in Schools Act to address the increasing frequency of fentanyl overdoses in schools. This legislation would specifically set aside funding for schools in rural communities that could be used to purchase naloxone and help train school officials on how to administer it. The bill requires 50 percent of the grants provided by the legislation go to schools in rural areas, with the remaining funds allocated to schools in areas with high rates of youth overdoses.

“The opioid crisis has impacted Michigan families of every background. Unfortunately, this issue has begun to affect more school children than ever before. I am supporting this legislation because it will increase access to life-saving resources and help make sure rural schools in particular receive much-needed funding to confront this crisis,” said Moolenaar.

The bill would provide funding for schools for training and purchase of naloxone, commonly referred to as Narcan.
