Moolenaar: “The Laken Riley Act Makes Our Communities Safer”

January 22, 2025

Today, Congressman John Moolenaar voted for the Laken Riley Act. The legislation ensures illegal immigrants who commit crimes like burglary, theft, and larceny are held accountable for their actions and are deported from the country. Moolenaar voted for the legislation last year, and again, earlier this month when it was initially passed by the House of Representatives. The legislation has now passed in both chambers of Congress and is headed to President Donald Trump’s desk.

"The Laken Riley Act makes our communities safer by holding criminal illegal immigrants responsible for their crimes and removing them from the country so they can no longer pose a threat to the American people. President Trump promised to secure the southern border and when he signs this legislation it will help protect our country,” said Congressman John Moolenaar.

The Laken Riley Act is a response to the murder of Laken Riley, a nursing student in Georgia, who was killed by Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. Ibarra was previously arrested for theft and endangering a child but was allowed to remain in the United States.
