Moolenaar Introduces Legislation to Clarify Trucking Regulations

June 13, 2019

This week, Congressman John Moolenaar introduced legislation clarifying federal trucking rules after hearing from employers in his district.

The legislation clarifies the federal rules on certain transporters that move medium-duty trucks –think the size of a U-Haul truck – and allows the last truck on the hauler to safely overhang the end of the trailer.

The trailers are designed to safely accommodate this situation, but sometimes the last truck on the trailer exceeds the 75-foot length allowed by federal law. Some states have allowed this practice while other states have sought additional guidance from the federal government.

This legislation will clarify the law and allow the last truck on the trailer to exceed the 75-foot length.

Congressman Moolenaar made the following statement on the legislation:

"This common-sense legislation will make it easier for trucking companies in Michigan and across the country to comply with the law as they move trucks across state lines to be rented or sold. I am proud to meet with so many constituents and to work on behalf of hardworking Americans."

The legislation is supported by Justin Horvath, the president and CEO of the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership.

He made the following statement on the legislation:

"As an economic developer, I deeply understand the importance of trucking in moving America's economy forward. This legislation will help cut red tape and improve safety for companies in Michigan and throughout the country. I want to thank Congressman Moolenaar for his work on behalf of his constituents and I strongly encourage Congress to support the legislation."

Finally, note the legislation makes no changes to federal trucking weight regulations.
