Moolenaar and Dingell Introduce Legislation to Help Veterans

February 2, 2023

Today, Congressman John Moolenaar and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell re-introduced legislation that would require the VA to increase the number of patient advocates available to serve veterans. Patient advocates assist veterans with paperwork, services, and appeals related to their care.

"Our veterans put their lives on the line in service to our country and deserve the best service from the VA. I have heard from many veterans that there are simply not enough patient advocates at the VA," said Congressman Moolenaar. "The legislation will increase the number of patient advocates and improve accountability, so our veterans will receive better care and attention from VA staff."

“America’s veterans rely on the VA for access to vital programs, benefits, and supportive services. Patient advocates employed by the VA are an important source of support for veterans navigating the VA health system, but I know from first-hand discussions with veterans that they don’t always have someone to help them through the process,” said Congresswoman Dingell. “I am glad to join Congressman Moolenaar in introducing the Veterans Patient Advocacy Act, which will increase the number of VA patient advocates to so veterans can access the support they deserve.”

The VFW and Student Veterans of America support the legislation. The organizations' previous statements of support from 2021 can be found here.
